File Type Description
.doc/.docx A .doc file is a word processing document created by Microsoft Word, or another word processing program, such as OpenOffice Writer or Apple Pages. It may contain formatted text, images, tables, graphs, charts, page formatting and print settings.
.gif Unlike the .jpeg image format, a .gif uses lossless compression that does not degrade the quality of the image. However, a .gif stores image data using indexed color, meaning each image can include a maximum of 256 colors.
.jpeg/.jpg A .jpeg is a compressed image file format that is not limited to a certain amount of color, like .gif images are. While .jpeg images can contain colorful, high-resolution image data, it is a lossy format, which means some quality is lost when the image is compressed.
.pdf A .pdf file captures document text, fonts, images, and even formatting of document from a variety of applications. Since a .pdf contains color-accurate information, it should also print the same way it looks on your screen.
.png A .png includes many of the benefits of both .gif and .jpeg formats. For example, .png images use lossless compression like .gif files, so they do not have any blurring or other artifacts that may appear in .jpeg images. The .png format also supports 24-bit color like the .jpeg format, so a .png image may include over 16 million colors.
.tif/.tiff A .tiff is a graphics file format and is the standard image format across multiple computer platforms. The .tiff format can handle color depths ranging from 1-bit to 24-bit.
.txt A .txt is a a standard text document that contains plain text. It can be opened and edited in any text-editing or word-processing program.
.xls/.xlsx An .xls file is a spreadsheet file created by Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet program, such as OpenOffice Calc or Apple Numbers. It contains one or more worksheets, which store and display data in a table format. Excel files may also store mathematical functions, charts, styles and formatting.
